So as you may have heard it has been suggested that io9 are a bunch of copy cats. Turns out they really are.

Kinja'd!!!

Honestly didn’t expect them to just come out and admit it. I would congratulate them on their honesty but fuck em, plagiarising twats.

Once it stopped being a top article and getting fresh clicks they made this bold bold choice! Congratualtions Gawker Media! I would pat you on the back but for some reason I’m having trouble finding your spine.

There seems to be an awful lot of this sentiment, but it seems to have been nuked in less than four hours, on a Sunday. I realize four hours internet time is like four score and seven years to some people, but that’s pretty good if you think back to plagiarism scandals in the past that took weeks or months to play out.

It wasn’t an editor. It was someone from their version of oppositelock, who was given the chance to work as a weekend editor for that day. His first and last day on the job. Gawker sites are by no means perfect but I09 is one of the good ones.

I noticed a lot of people were calling out mweyer about the articles being the exact same, and he defended himself. I just now saw that they had removed the article. Having gone back and read the comments again, this apparently is not mweyer’s first instance of plagiarism.

Also, I’ve never heard someone suggest io9 were copycats. And I read it quite often.

Yeah I heard people saying that in the comments but of course there is more to it than that. Turns out the previous articles on io9 accused of copying were written by the same guy as you said.

I compared one of the other posts he had written (about Sci-Fi mothers) and literally all he did was flip the ordering of the numbers. He didn’t change the numbers of each mother listed, he just changed from ascending to descending (or maybe vice-versa). I’m amazed this guy was allowed to hang around as long as he has.

io9 is really only at fault here for not realizing the article was plagiarized before sharing it.

It originated from Observation Deck; think Oppo for nerds.
